Charity Sector – Strategy and Positioning for a Veterans Charity
Overview
In the charity sector, Aperture Strategy supported a specialist UK veterans charity working with veterans in the criminal justice system to strengthen its strategic direction, articulate its distinctive value, and position itself for sustainable growth. Using our Four Frames methodology, we helped leadership connect frontline experience, partnership working and long-term ambition into a clear strategic narrative for both a public facing strategy brochure and internal decision-making framework.
Key Challenges
The charity operated in a demanding environment shaped by prisons, probation, NHS-funded programmes, veteran charities and public expectations. Its frontline work was highly valued, but the wider strategic story was less clearly expressed. Trustees and senior leaders needed a framework that explained not only what the charity delivered, but how its role created value within a broader system of rehabilitation, prevention and public benefit.
Aperture Strategy Solution
Using the Four Frames, we worked with leaders to explore how the organisation was experienced by veterans, commissioners and partner agencies, before defining the conditions needed for long-term impact. This included clarifying the charity’s role within national partnerships such as Forces Employment Charity’s Op NOVA, strengthening how outcomes were described, and ensuring that governance, resilience and collaboration were visible within the strategy. The result was a framework that linked day-to-day mentoring activity to wider societal effects - including reduced reoffending, stronger communities and lower long-term pressure on public services.
“The process really helped us bring coherence across the charity and ensure we are resilient and properly linked in to wider stakeholder networks.”

Benefits and Return on Investment
The strategy gave the organisation a clearer voice with funders, commissioners and partners, while preserving the authenticity of its mission. It strengthened strategic confidence, sharpened external positioning and created a more coherent platform for future growth, collaboration and influence.
